L & F's joyful, colourful, absolutely deadly wedding in Co. Westmeath
Some weddings stay with you. L & F's wedding at The Village Barn in Tyrrellspass was one of those — a day so full of colour, craic and genuine joy that I was still smiling on the drive home!
The sun showed up like it had been personally invited. And honestly, given the energy of this couple, I think it had.
The day itself
I've photographed a lot of weddings and I'll tell you what never gets old, watching two people who are completely mad about each other just enjoy their day. L & F did exactly that. No stress, no drama, just pure celebration from morning to night.
We did the family photos and wedding party shots , the ones everyone wants and grandparents absolutely love, and then we threw the rulebook out the window and went full chaos mode. The silliest poses we could dream up, absolute hysterics, and some of the most genuinely happy photographs I've ever taken. That's always where the magic is. Not the perfectly staged moment, but the one right after it when everyone dissolves into laughter.
The bride's embroidered flower dress deserves its own paragraph. Delicate, colourful, completely and utterly her. Watching her move through the venue in it was something else, I kept thinking, this is what wedding dresses are supposed to look like.
The Village Barn, Tyrrellspass — a venue worth knowing about
This was my first time photographing at The Village Barn and it was absolutely my last.
Tyrrellspass is a small village in Co. Westmeath, not the most obvious wedding destination, but that's exactly what makes it special. The Village Barn sits in the kind of Irish countryside that makes you remember why you live here.
Rolling green, big open skies, and a venue with so much personality it practically introduces itself.
It's rustic without being rough around the edges. Think exposed beams, twinkling lights, cosy corners, and vintage touches that feel considered rather than thrown together. The main barn is warm and full of character, genuinely beautiful for dining and dancing, and the layout just works for a wedding day in the way that some venues don't until you've shot there three times and figured out the tricks.
There's outdoor ceremony space too, and the gardens are gorgeous for photos. The kind of setting where you don't need to go looking for a backdrop because you're already standing in one.
What struck me most though was the atmosphere. The staff are friendly, relaxed, and quietly brilliant at what they do, the kind of team that makes a wedding day run smoothly without you ever noticing them doing it. It doesn't feel like a conveyor belt. It feels like a place that genuinely cares how your day goes.
What it's like to shoot there
As a documentary wedding photographer I'm always looking for variety, different light, different spaces, different textures. The Village Barn gives you all of it. The barn interior alone shifts beautifully throughout the day, from soft morning light to warm golden tones as the evening comes in. Outside you've got the gardens, the open countryside, and enough interesting corners to keep me happily occupied for a full day.
For couples who want their wedding album to feel alive, full of movement and laughter and real moments rather than posed set pieces, this venue is made for that approach.
Thinking about The Village Barn for your wedding?
If you're a couple who wants a venue with genuine soul, a relaxed feel, and the kind of natural beauty that makes great photography effortless, go and view The Village Barn. Seriously. You won't regret it.
And if you're looking for a wedding photographer who'll document your day exactly as it happens, no stiff posing, no interrupting the flow, just honest and joyful photographs that are completely true to you, I'd love to hear about your plans.
