I’d love to share a heartwarming story from a recent engagement photoshoot in Temple Bar, Dublin, where the rain lashed down, the wind howled through the cobbled streets... and we laughed our hearts out, enjoying every single drop.
The groom-to-be had big plans. He wanted to propose to his partner at sunset on Howth Summit — a classic, romantic spot with sweeping views over Dublin Bay. But sure, the Irish weather had other ideas. Torrential rain and wild winds rolled in, thanks to none other than Storm Agnes!
Did we let it stop us? Absolutely not. If anything, the storm made the moment even more unforgettable.
Picture this: an American couple visiting Dublin, completely smitten, caught in a downpour... and a surprise proposal that turned a stormy day into the start of a beautiful new chapter.
As the rain poured down, I waited just outside the Temple Bar Pub — umbrella in one hand, camera in the other, heart racing with anticipation. The plan was simple: they’d ask a “friendly stranger” (that’d be me!) to take a photo on their phone. Instead, I offered to snap one with my “fancy camera” and email it later. Meanwhile, the groom-to-be was shaking with nerves (and probably the cold too!).
Then came the moment.
He got down on one knee, right there in the middle of Temple Bar, surrounded by glistening cobblestones and the unmistakable buzz of the city. Her reaction? Pure magic. Shock, joy, tears — and then the cheers started from the crowd of passersby who’d realised what was happening. It was like a little pocket of joy opened up in the middle of the storm.
The streets might have been soaked, but the atmosphere was warm, electric, and full of love. After the proposal, we wandered the colourful corners of Temple Bar, capturing candid, joy-filled moments in the rain. From giggles under umbrellas to wet, windswept kisses, this engagement photoshoot in Temple Bar was everything you’d want from a real, honest love story.
The weather didn’t ruin the proposal — it added to it. The puddles, the wind, the umbrellas turning inside out… all part of the story. And what a story it was.
As a photographer based in Dublin, these are the moments I live for. Not the perfect, polished ones — but the beautifully messy, real ones. The ones where you throw out the plan and lean into the moment. If you’re thinking of planning a surprise proposal in Dublin, I say go for it. Rain or shine, your story deserves to be told.
So here’s to love in every season, laughter in every storm, and unforgettable memories made on the rain-soaked streets of Temple Bar.
